This is one of my favorite places to go. It’s tough to beat fresh air out in the woods. The nature center is located in the middle of suburbia. Thousands of people drive by daily and likely have no idea. I’ve known several long-time Johnson County residents who have never been.
Ernie Miller is a true gem. They have a nature center that offers many educational programs and field trips for local schools. It’s a great place to observe and learn about local wildlife.
The park has numerous paved and dirt trails winding through 116 acres of woodland. These woods provide a safe habitat for animals that would struggle with city life. The prime example of this is the large deer population. Ernie Miller is home to numerous human-friendly deer. If you walk quietly through the trails, there is an excellent opportunity to see these animals in their natural environment.
Next time you have an hour or two free, consider a nature walk. It’s the perfect way to unplug and unwind.
